New Groups for Producers

Build Your Plan to Get Your Film Made

Last week, I shared some thoughts on the importance of community for producers, and this week, I’m continuing this little detour from my usual topics. This time, I want to talk about a piece that’s essential in producing but often overlooked—building a strategic plan.

In producing, there’s a key distinction between strategy and tactical planning. Strategy is your big-picture vision—it’s about the “why” and “what” behind your project. For a producer, this could mean identifying the financing approach, the target market, and key attachments.

For example, the producers of Sing Sing adopted an equitable financing model where all core cast and crew members, from the lead actor to post-production staff, received equal pay and shared ownership of the film. This strategic approach aimed to foster a sense of community and collective investment in the project's success. Director Greg Kwedar explained that they built a model based on parity, ensuring everyone worked for the same rate and collectively owned the movie.

Strategy is your north star, helping you stay aligned even when things shift.

On the other hand, a tactical plan focuses on the “how.” This is where the specific actions, timelines, and resources come in: crafting a compelling title, writing a clear engaging logline, creating a pitch deck, or developing a festival submission calendar. Oftentimes, producers put the tactical before the strategic and run into a “cart before the horse” problem.

Tactics are what bring your strategy to life, ensuring each step moves you closer to your ultimate goal.

This balance of high-level strategy and actionable tactics is something we’ll focus on in the Moonshot Mentor Mastermind Producer Group and Moonshot Mentor Hybrid Producer Group. Both groups are designed to help you create a comprehensive plan that aligns your vision with the concrete steps needed to execute it—all within a supportive community.

If you’re interested, you can learn more about the Mastermind here and the Moonshot Hybrid Producer Group here. Both are carefully curated to create a committed, like-minded circle of peers. I’ll continue sharing more on this journey next week—there’s so much to dig into when it comes to the unique path of producing!

My blog aims to help people achieve their ambitious goals, their moonshot if you will. 😃 Oftentimes, though, we neglect an essential aspect of pursuing our dreams: the inevitable missteps, obstacles, and failures that come our way. Failing to acknowledge and process these losses properly can lead to imposter syndrome, burnout, low self-esteem, confusion, and even result in completely abandoning our dreams. 😟  That's why I strongly advocate for embracing grief awareness (along with other tools like values identification, knowing your why, sharpening executive function, habit forming, and more.) By doing so, we can effectively navigate challenges, regain motivation, and hit our moonshots. ✌🏾️ If you know someone who could benefit, please share this newsletter or recommend me to them. 🙏
