What Tools Do You Need to Dream Big? 🛠️

Inspired by Black History: Practical steps to achieve bold goals.

What happens when the world tells you to settle for less than what you know you’re capable of? Mae C. Jemison, the first Black woman to travel into space, faced that question head-on. Her answer was simple: "Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity." These words are a powerful reminder for anyone with big dreams—a moonshot, really.

During Black History Month, I'm spotlighting Mae’s story as a lesson in aiming high, even when the odds feel stacked against you. For many of my readers and coaching clients, big career goals often come with self-doubt, fear, and real obstacles, like societal bias. Mae’s words challenge us to protect what makes us unique.

How do you hold on to your imagination, creativity, and curiosity while pursuing something audacious?

Let’s explore.

What Is a Moonshot in a Career?

A moonshot is a bold goal that feels out of reach. These types of goals are visions that demand boldness, open-mindedness, and a willingness to explore new possibilities.

For some, a moonshot might be starting a business. For others, it could mean switching careers, leading a big project, or even retiring to follow a passion. These ambitions demand risks, adaptability, and problem-solving. Along the way, they reshape who you are.

Mae’s Moonshot

Mae grew up during a time when Black women were not encouraged to pursue science. But she was inspired by the Apollo program and Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek so she envisioned a future where she would explore space.

People tried to steer her away like teachers who suggested she become a nurse instead of a scientist. She sadly faced bias and doubters at every turn. But Mae still became an engineer, a doctor, and ultimately, an astronaut.

In 1992, Mae’s dream came true when she flew aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour. She refused to let other people define her.

The Hard Truth About Moonshots

Big goals aren’t easy.

Here are a few truths about chasing your moonshot:

  • It takes effort. Stamina and resilience are key. Moonshots aren’t quick wins.

  • Support helps. While the vision is yours, having a network of people who believe in you can make all the difference.

  • You will fail. Setbacks are inevitable. Success depends on how you handle them.

How to Stay True to Yourself While Chasing a Moonshot

Pursuing bold dreams can test your confidence and focus.

Here are five ways to stay grounded:

  1. Be Kind to Yourself. When things go wrong, don’t beat yourself up. Treat yourself with the compassion you’d show a friend.

  2. Prioritize Rest. Sleep isn’t optional. Rest helps you think clearly and stay focused.

  3. Nourish Your Body. Eating well fuels your energy and mindset. Your body needs care to support your ambition.

  4. Move Your Body. Exercise relieves stress and strengthens your resilience. Even a short walk can reset your mind.

  5. Recharge Your Spirit. Find what restores you—whether it’s meditation, hobbies, or time with loved ones—and make it a priority.

How to Process Failure

Failure is part of the journey, but it doesn’t have to define you.

Here’s how to process it:

  • Assess Without Judgment. Look at what happened objectively. Avoid blame and focus on lessons learned.

  • Name the Loss. Acknowledge what the failure cost—time, energy, resources, maybe even trust. Identifying the loss gives you clarity about what was at stake and what needs to be rebuilt.

  • Challenge the Story. What meaning are you attaching to the failure? Does it truly reflect your ability? Reframe the narrative if needed.

  • Take Small Steps. Regain control by taking simple actions. Even small wins, like organizing your space or eating a good meal, can restore momentum.

Bottom Line

Mae’s story is more than becoming an astronaut. It’s about protecting imagination and determination against challenges and doubt.
