Shibui is a Japanese word with many meanings.
For some, it’s something that puckers the tastebuds. For others, it’s something effortlessly cool.
But the meaning I keep coming back to? Beauty in the imperfect.
Handwritten notes. Improvisational comedy. A worn leather jacket. My dad’s scraggly beard. A rock garden. Cindy Crawford’s mole.
Our careers — and the great, great, great effort it takes to sustain them — are imperfect, too.
Which is why I’ve created this Substack. It’s for people like me (ambitious professionals) who are navigating transitions and rethinking what success looks like for them. Whether you’re stepping into a leadership role, recovering from a career disruption, or exploring how to align your work with your values, you’ll find tools, strategies, and support to help you create a fulfilling, purpose-driven career. My weekly blogs are packed with tools, resources and strategies, but there’s another layer of being a subscriber that you may not be aware of:

Here’s what a few subscribers had to say:
“I felt so productive and grateful to actively work and connect with folks. Laverne’s guidance through the sprints and breaks was incredibly helpful, keeping my focus on what I needed to do rather than how much time I had left to do it.”
"I had a comforting and productive experience attending a Moonshot Mentor co-working session for the first time. I've never used the Pomodoro method, and learned how helpful this technique is to working on my creative and personal projects."
“It’s the good kind of peer pressure.”
If shibui is beauty in the imperfect, then this space is its career equivalent—a place to experiment, reflect, and build something meaningful, flaws and all.
I’d love for you to be part of this thoughtful, generous community. Become a paid subscriber for $5/month or $50/year.
